Portrait of my father sleeping

acrylic on paper, 2022

80 x 59 cm

“one summer evening my father, struggling with retirement and having spent the day searching for things to burn in a fire and trying to keep himself occupied, fell asleep on the couch. i sketched and captured images of my dad that night, struck with the sad realisation of the advancing age and vulnerability of a parent. i completed the painting later that year. in the meantime my father has been diagnosed with dementia. he no. longer knows who i am.”

this is a portrait of my mother when she had the flu. It is a picture of patient endurance. she sat very still. she had little or no concern for her appearance. i painted her when she was feeling both comfortable and uncomfortable.
